步 - bù - step

步 is used for the number of steps (as in walking) or movements in chess playing etc.

走几步路 - zou3 ji3 bù lù - to walk a very short distance

一步棋 - yì bù qí - one piece that is moved (in chess etc.)

赶了两步 - gan3 le liang3 bù - (have) quicked 2 paces to catch up

慢了一步 - màn le yí bù - one pace slower
